Komodo Pioneers Achievements 2018-2019: Full Report

Picture
The first year as a Komodo notary node was a success. We maintained a stable notarization service with our Australian server throughout the election year of 2018 - 2019.

Through the efforts of ours and of the other notary operators we were protecting dozens of Komodo Platform blockchains as well as a number of external blockchains. There were even a few 51 % attack attempts, but the security solution jl777 had pioneered proved itself and defeated those attacks.

This is just a beginning. Now we are about to enter another election cycle and the Komodo community will elect 30 new notary operators. We expect that Komodo Platform and its security service will gain more recognition in 2019 and 2020 as it is the only available and practical way to secure and protect small blockchains.

Pioneer Transparency Report

Our team feels each notary node team should maintain full transparency towards the voters, especially if they made significant campaign promises.

To be a leading example we have published a comprehensive report about our achievements and the overall situation, including a treasury report.

Pioneer Campaign Promise

Komodo is about to have its third annual notary node elections, and Komodo Pioneers got one of the best campaign promises.

Our plan is to reinvest back into Komodo ecosystem.

We pledge up to 50 % of our notary node revenue towards activities that support Komodo ecosystems, such as events and meetups. We can also support other small scale initiatives, such as development projects.
Picture
The pledged percentage is smaller if the KMD price is below four dollars. That is to ensure sufficient funding to maintain stable notarization service, which is our core responsibility.

Situation Summary

We are currently operating a notary node on the SH region.
  • Our SH node got auto-elected for next year because of its high-performance score.
  • We are campaigning to get a second node on the EU region, and thus operate a total of two nodes.

We are looking for a way to support the Komodo ecosystem.
  • We have a campaign promise to distribute part of the notary node revenue towards events, projects, and other initiatives.
  • The KMD price has been trading below 4 USD most of the election year, which means we have had limited funding.
  • We are accumulating KMD and thus far have saved 30 % of our revenue as long term capital.

We have had achievements worth celebrating.
  • Our continuous event and meetup coverage in the Netherlands has created an enthusiastic dutch following for Komodo.
  • We hosted numerous Komodo presentations and workshops.
  • Out of the Dutch scene came a project called Komodore64, that is now actively advancing Komodo's gaming tech.

Komodo Workshop: Become a market maker on BarterDEX

Our goal for 2018 is to activate Komodo community and encourage them to start meetups, events, and podcasts. To kick things off, we are helping to organize and sponsor a workshop where we will teach people how Komodo’s decentralized exchange could be used to create passive income.

We interviewed one of the organizers, Barv, to gain an insight into what will happen during the Komodo workshop event.
Good afternoon, Barv. Can you enlighten us about what it means to be a ‘market maker? Is it possible to run a decentralized money making machine?
Picture
You might know of market makers as professional market participants in stock and currency markets. They are ‘the guys’ that make money no matter the market goes up or down because they know how to get profit from the spreads between the markets.

With bitcoin, we learned we could be our bank using the Bitcoin protocol to generate accounts and execute transactions without the need of a trusted middleman. Bitcoin is permissionless & free to use for anyone as long as you comply with the rules.

Now, using BarterDEX, anyone can be their own marketmaker too! Anyone can buy and sell cryptocurrencies and assets using the completely decentralized and trustless technology of BarterDEX as provided by the Komodo developers team. If you want to be a market maker, you can. All you have to do is set up the system to run as a liquidity provider for the markets on which you wish to participate, fund your smart addresses, define your strategy and go!
That sounds amazing! What can we expect from the event itself? How many people are you expecting to attend the event?
Picture
The crypto scene in The Netherlands is very vibrant. There is an active startup scene in Amsterdam; there are many hackathons organized by both corporates and government, there are active scenes of crypto idealists in The Hague and Utrecht, a huge Ethereum developer community and lots of crypto enthusiasts all over the country. I guess our inborn urge to disapprove hierarchy and level decision making fuels the love for crypto.

Komodo is getting attention more and more, and people react very enthusiastically on our BarterDEX workshop. Although it is a working day for most people, we still expect at least 20 to 30 participants.
What can you tell us about the content of this workshop? What will be the agenda?
Picture
In the energizing environment of The Hague Tech, an entrepreneurial tech hub in The Hague, we got the opportunity to launch Blockbar. Blockbar is the Open Blockchain Lab Den Haag. It is a spot where once a week (every Friday) anyone can walk in and discuss, learn and work with like-minded on blockchain projects. Here we want to explore new ideas, experiment with social governance and new revenue or income models. We believe blockchain can empower people. This workshop is the result of discussions we had on the options to generate passive income. As we were discussing BarterDEX a lot as a result of Komodo team member Diesmaster’s presentations, Bart Roorda (Dutch blockchain professional & developer) came with the idea to set up a BarterDEX LP node on a Raspberry Pi.

We’ll start the day explaining the setup, working and prepping of BarterDEX after which we’ll guide the participants through the setup of the Raspberry Pi to function as an always-on BarterDEX node, which is ideal to function as a liquidity provider.
Will there be a stream for the online audience?
Picture
We arranged the podcast team of Blockrock to record an interview, Vlogger Artakush to tape or stream the event on Steemit channels as Dtube and Dlive and we’ll publish the guides and other relevant links on the Blockbar website afterwards. Stay tuned on the Blockbar twitter feed as well.
You are also a Komodo Pioneer member, can you explain to our audience why they should consider voting Komodo Pioneers in the ongoing Komodo elections?
Picture
Komodo Pioneers likes this event a lot because what BarterDEX needs most is liquidity. If BarterDEX gets more popular, Komodo will benefit. Komodo Pioneers wants to promote the fame and use of Komodo so the value of the community will increase healthily. Blockbar is a not for profit community initiative. The sponsoring of Komodo Pioneers enables Blockbar to create even more attractive events; it’s a win-win situation.

It is great to see that the Komodo community is endorsing the Blockbar initiative and Pioneer approach, as Pondsea pledges KMD to sponsor our lunch! This is how communities should work. We love it!

Indeed, many thanks to Pondsea for offering his help. He is another notary node candidate who reached out to us. The eagerness of everyone to help is what makes the Komodo community so strong, and why we can be confident about Komodo’s success in the long run.

Anyone is welcome to participate in the workshop on Friday. Be sure to read our proposal as well and consider voting us in the ongoing elections.

The second Komodo notary node elections are almost over. Up to 30 spots are there for taking, and the campaigning by candidates have been intense.

Some might wonder why they should bother voting, and here are few quick reasons:

  1. Notary nodes provide security for the whole Komodo ecosystem. The Komodo community needs to select candidates capable of providing the technical service.
  2. Many candidates have excellent campaign promises, and picking those can benefit the whole Komodo ecosystem.

The campaign promises range from marketing activities to development aspects. All are very important for the success of Komodo. In fact, it looks like as if these notary nodes are turning into a new type of blockchain governance feature.

For your convenience, we will list here all the websites and links that help you in your decision and in the voting itself.
  • Komodo Platform's Official Blog explains what the elections are about
  • Komodo also produced a video showing how voting happens through Agama Wallet
  • VOTE Explorer is handy for double checking your VOTE balance.
  • List of all the candidates
  • Live voting situation
  • Election map

Use the election map to find out where all the nodes are.

Tech Kickoff - Running Komodo Notary Nodes

3/25/2018

A smooth and reliable notary node service will require much more than a typical server sitting in a data center. Node operators have to provide a very stable notarization (security) service around the clock and be ready to update their nodes regularly.

As a result, there have to be several people keeping an eye on the servers. That is also what we are preparing for in Komodo Pioneers, and we got a seasoned sysadmin Mylo to lead the team. For transparency, it's good to talk a little bit about his background and skillset. Here are his main achievements in chronological order.
  • 2000 -  Worked full time for a telephony equipment manufacturer and software producer. Implemented CSTA protocol for controlling equipment.
  • 2003 - First java open source CSTA implementation released on SourceForge.
  • 2005 to 2009 - Built and supported custom asterisk builds (CentOS) for businesses
  • 2008 to 2011 - Built open source e-learning systems (Gentoo, Omnium World) for Australia's largest university.
    • First all online Masters degree in visual arts worldwide.
    • 20,000 active users and global community outreach projects.
  • 2012 - Built and supported largest media companies, car classifieds, telephone ads, and back-end portal.
  • 2014 to 2015 - Build, mentor and support a small team on a national * VoIP network for a carrier servicing radio/isp
  • 2018 - Joined Komodo team to make blockchain history

Mylo Sees Big Potential in Komodo

Mylo wants to give his tech experience for the emerging Komodo ecosystem. However, even though he has had quite a technology-focused life, he doesn't come short on other skills either.  Mylo explains:
Working with pioneering tech in Australia has required more communication-based business skills and collaboration than just tech alone as the tech hub, and market size is orders of magnitude smaller - these tools have proved to be necessary in the world of entrepreneurial survival.
A notary node operator requires responsive sysadmin skills and knowledge of attack mitigation techniques to provide a quality service to the greater community. Mylo can say with confidence to have this experience as he has dealt with businesses who rely on products and services that he maintains on the server side.
Mylo jumped into crypto tech after a costly business arrangement to see what innovation existed. Very quickly he found himself mining cryptocurrencies and kept trying different algorithms with old hardware. The experience led him to be enlightened by the possibilities blockchain poses for the future.

In November 2017 Mylo joined the Komodo Slack and never left. For that, we thank the Komodo CTO ca333 as Mylo was drawn in by an interview in which he was explaining automated command line portfolio management in the BarterDEX API.

All in all, there is quite a bit we could do within the Pioneer project, and on Komodo in general.

Meet Komodo Pioneers - An Organization For Entrepreneurs

3/23/2018

Picture
We are happy to have finally launched our project, and while doing so, we announced our candidacy on the Komodo notary node elections in 2018.

First things first, what do we do?

Komodo Pioneers has a vision and strategy in place to give financial support to anyone wanting to help us spread the word about Komodo, entrepreneurship, and decentralization. We will put Komodo on the map.

Having said all that, who are we?

We are a group of people - a community, who is building up an organization based on the same values than the Komodo project was founded. We seek to empower those who want to help with our goals of decentralization.

We have a vision, and all who share that may join us and help us reach our goals.

You Are Part of Our Plan

Through Komodo's security service our dedicated notary node team will help to secure the Komodo ecosystem. This service earns us KMD coins, which we then use for activities which promote the use and publicity of Komodo Platform. In other words, we reinvest in Komodo and strive for network effects.

In essence, we pledge to give up to 50 % of the revenue to activities that support Komodo and its community. Anyone can join our Pioneer community and receive financial support for various promotional activities, namely Komodo Pioneer Meetups all over the world.

We will also be looking for possibilities to expand on the technical and business side. In fact, we are in an ideal position to connect with new businesses and help them get started with Komodo Platform.

Join our project and become part of our team.

We Need Your Support

For our project to kick in high gear, we will need to get elected. Anyone can help us to do that by spreading the word or voting for us during the elections.

We Shape The Future

The most exciting breakthroughs of the 21st century will not occur because of technology, but because of an expanded concept of what it means to be human.
